Dan Deacon @ Mercury Lounge, NYC 5/12/07

He may look like he’d be the most awkward kid in the room, but Baltimore’s electro-animaniac Dan Deacon is a charmer. As per his custom, Deacon set his rig of pedals, keys, lightbulbs, and discman in front of the stage, flipping the show-going script for those who chose it; some stood on stage looking over his sweat-soaked shoulder, while he commanded the concentric semi-circles of loons from the dance floor. (And on this night “loons” included The Office’s B.J. Novak a.k.a. Ryan Howard, not to be outdone by Jim Halpert’s recent show-going exploits.)
Mercury Lounge never felt more like a loft party: During songs people jumped, high-fived, and flailed; sang along from lyrics sheets; and let loose during a floor-clearing dance-tag cirle. And between songs folks held their neighbors’ hands in a hilarious Deacon-led prayer/apology, about a friend’s Netflix account (which devolved into a gross and brilliant recitation of the [...]

New Editors – “An End Has A Start”

We were a wee bit pissy when we talked about the first track to leak (three pee references already!) from the new Editors record (believe “mildly warmed over post-Coldplay arena rock” was tossed in there). Admitted. So in the interest of being fair and balanced, have a listen of the title track (set to a stream of random images), which brings it back to their ‘dark disco’ and is hella better than the last track.

For MP3 action, head to Deaf Indie Elephants.
Urination. (Sorry, needed five references to win a bet.)
Enjoy!

New Beastie Boys – “The Rat Cage”

They weren’t kidding about the all-instrumental part. But as far as Mike D saying it’ll be straight “post-punk instrumental” and sound nothing like their last sans vocals effort … well, with Money Mark on keys, you’re bound to get The In Sounds From Way Out!’s groovy flavor. Anyway, Reader Becky sent us this taste of The Mix-Up, saying “Personally, I love it.” Have a listen…

The Mix-Up is out 6/26 on Capitol.

New Ferraby Lionheart

Head to MySpace to check on the progress artist to watch Ferraby Lionheart’s been making on his big debut LP for Nettwerk. We gave you a listen of “Before We’re Dead (New Orleans Song)” a few months back, now there’s three more to sample: the Elliott Smith-y “Vermont Avenue”; the lovely, lazy, glocks-and-piano-pop of “Small Planet”; and the croony acoustic ditty “A Bell And Tumble.”
FUN FACT: Ferraby Lionheart is his birthname. Fer reals.
Catch The Brass Ring is out 9/4 on Nettwerk.

Headlines: “NME” Suffering From Slow-News-Day Woes, Too

Little did the editor who assigned this story know that she’d inadvertently inspired Fatboy Slim’s next Spike Jonze-directed video, about a community activist (played by Christopher Walken) who tries…

New Animal Collective Live Video – “Cuckoo”

All that stays serene about this stunning newbie from Animal Collective is the piano melody; the rest, as you’d expect, is prone to sonic freak outs and the Geologist’s manipulative madness. P4K dug up this clip, recorded for TVP Kultura, a Polish arts and culture network, and it’s a must-watch for AC fans.

Maybe “Cuckoo” will turn up on Animal Collective’s forthcoming Domino-released LP, maybe it won’t (we have no idea, actually) — but it oughta get you primed for the band’s tour, which kicks off tonight in Ohio. Dates after the jump.

New Blitzen Trapper – “Futures & Folly”

Last thing we heard from Portland’s left-field kitchen-sink country rockers Blitzen Trapper, they gave Heart’s “Crazy On You” a Kevin Barnes-styled makeover. But now we get to talk up the band’s awesome Wild Mountain Nation, Blitzen’s third LP, due out this June. Because they’ve got guitars and are from Portland, we’d love to avoid mentioning the Shins; but there they are, seeping into “Futures & Folly”’s melody. It’s okay though, the rest of the track comes from the best of ’70s styled AM lilt rock.
Blitzen Trapper – “Futures & Folly” (MP3)
And really, that’s as far as the Shins comparisons go with Blitzen; though rooted in country, the band takes all sorts of detours, starting with the title track’s sunny day, good-time slide-guitar rollick and roll.
Blitzen Trapper – “Wild Mountain Nation” (MP3)

Wild Mountain Nation is out 6/12 on LidKerCow. The band’s hitting the road this summer with the boozy bloggers [...]
